Why on earth do we have 3 different spellings for a word that sounds exactly the same? 🌍 Well, English isn’t crazy — it’s just a complex system. 👩🏻‍🏫 Homophones are actually an incredible facet of our language that show how intentional the spelling system really is. ☝🏼 It helps if we look at some word relatives! 👯‍♀️ 🟢“Their” is a possessive pronoun belonging with “they” and “them”. 🌟 Consider that “y” undergoing a “change to i” in the making! Another helpful mnemonic is to think of the “I” in “their” as a person (quite literally, point to a person). 🟢“There” indicates location. It’s the word “here” in it. 🏠 Another related word, “where” - with the <ere> chunk also pays homage to location. 🗺️ 🟢”They’re” is a contraction, shortened for “they are”. The contraction is taking place of the <a>. 👥 Their ➡️ Possession There ➡️ Location They’re ➡️ Contraction Give students plenty of opportunities to use these words in context to help solidify their understanding! What’s the precursor to reading words in isolation? Well, once kiddos have some letter sound correspondences down and blending skills, let’s give it a go. Truth be told: it will be laborious at first… sometimes painfully slow. The art of teaching informs us on how to adjust and add/remove scaffolds. However, at the end of the day, we need to let them work through the heavy lifting in order for them to build those neural pathways!
